During this time of Covid-19, we are all locked up in our houses and feeling isolated. I am sure we have all had the time to take in our surroundings and appreciate them and also get sick of them. One thing that I have noticed the most is my lack of connection to the outside world. What has kept me calm is the small interaction I have with my “neighbors”.
I live in a one bedroom apartment in Boston, Massachusetts. My apartment building is right across a similar apartment structure, which inadvertently makes the tenants living across the street more like my neighbors. Earlier I had never even noticed them but now sometimes I catch myself looking towards them for assurance, that this is the new normal for the foreseeable future.
While being close enough that I am now aware of their daily routine and vice versa, I thought of a design concept that may make us feel connected in the most positive way through “light”.
The only thing that's common between all our spaces is the streaming sunshine we get on the few sunny days in Boston. If we all held up mirrors near our windows and helped bounce the sunlight off this reflective surface onto other mirrors held across the street we would be able to form a connection and allow each other to know that we are all in this together hoping for a healthier and brighter tomorrow.
I have forever been obsessed with finding spaces through light and this would be my small conceptual contribution for people to feel connected with their neighbors in this time of isolation, by sending out some light into the world.
